The term martial arts refers to all of the various systems of training for combat that have been arranged or systematized. Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons:
  • self-defense
  • competition
  • physical health and fitness
  • entertainment
  • as well as mental
  • physical
  • spiritual development
There are a large number of distinct styles and schools of martial arts. Sometimes, schools or styles are introduced by individual teachers or masters, or as a brand name by a specific gym.

Martial arts can be grouped by type or focus, or alternatively by regional origin.

Practice mixed-martial arts for nearly some years and see the body transformation. The various stances and movements add fluidity back to the joints, and improve flexibility in general.

Having this increase in flexibility will improve:
  • your torque while throwing punches
  • your Jean-Claude Van Damme-style high kicks, and
  • submissions in Brazilian jiujitsu

Focus is one of the most important aspects of practicing martial arts - the ancient samurais had an untouchable zen focus when they went into battle. Get ready to see a big increase in power - especially if you know how to throw a good Muay Thai kick!

Martial Arts is known for its positive benefits on people regardless of their age, gender, or culture. Countless Martial Arts techniques had been developed throughout the world, spanning cultural, geographical and time differences.

Types of Martial Arts: Generally, martial arts can be broken down into five distinct categories: Stand-up or striking styles, grappling styles, low impact styles, weapons based styles, and MMA (A Hybrid Sports Style).

Along with this, the emergence of MMA has caused quite a bit of mixing of styles in recent years to the point that a lot of dojos don't look quite the same as they used to.

Regardless, below are some of the more well-known styles.

Martial arts can be divided into the armed and unarmed arts.

The former include archery, spearmanship, and swordsmanship; the latter, which originated in China, emphasize striking with the feet and hands or grappling. In modern times, derivatives of some of the armed martial arts, such as kendo (fencing) and kyudo (archery), are practiced as sports.

Derivatives of the unarmed forms of combat, such as judo, sumo, karate, and tae kwon do, are practiced, as are self-defense forms, such as aikido, hapkido, and kung fu.

Simplified forms of tai chi chuan (taijiquan), a Chinese form of unarmed combat, are popular as healthful exercise, quite divorced from martial origins.
