Fighting is as ancient as man himself. This struggle to subdue another in combat,
unarmed or armed, is possibly a legacy handed down to us from our ancestors.
This desire for domination sowed the seeds for martial arts.
Indian martial arts refers to the fighting systems of the Indian subcontinent in South Asia. This includes what are now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and sometimes Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Different forms of Indian Martial Arts:
Kalaripayattu
- Kalaripayattu is a Martial art which originated as a style in south India during 3nd century BC to the 2nd century AD.
- The word kalari first appears in Sangam literature to describe both a battlefield and combat arena.
- The word kalari tatt denoted a martial feat, while kalari kozhai meant a coward in war.
- It is considered to be one of the oldest fighting system in existence. It is now practiced in Kerala, in contiguous parts of Tamil Nadu.
- It was originally practiced in northern and central parts of Kerala and the Tulunadu region of Karnataka.
Mardani Khel
- The Maharashtrian way of combat, mostly prevalent around and in the town of Kohlapur.
- It is particularly known for its use of the uniquely Indianpata(sword) and vita (corded lance).
Gatka
- Gatkais weapon-based Indian martial art basically created by the Sikhs of Punjab.
- There are many weapons used in Gatka like, Stick, Talwar, kirpan and kataar.
- The attacking and defense methods are based upon the positions of the hands feet and nature of weapons used.
- It is also displayed during the different celebrations or at fairs in Punjab.
Paika Akhadha
- The combination of dance and combat could be lethal, Paikha Akhadha hails from the Odisha, was once used by the state’s warriors is now only practiced as a performance art.
Lathi
- Lathi is an ancient armed martial art of India. It also refers one of the world’s oldest weapons used in martial arts.
- Lathi or stick martial arts practiced in Punjab and Bengal region of India.
- Lathi still remains a popular sport in Indian villages.
Bandesh
- Bandesh is an ancient Indian empty-handed Martial Art technique that uses various lock holds to defeat an armed assailant without killing him.
Silambam
- Silambamis a weapon-based Indian martial art from Tamil Nadu.
- The word Silambam itself means the staff, which is the primary weapon used.
- Silambam art also used animal movements of snake, tiger, eagle forms and footwork patterns also play a key role here.
