Karate: What Is It Really About?

This question seems innocent and easy to answer. But the truth is that it is not an easy question to answer, because it must be answered on many different levels. "What is karate really about?"

Is it about learning some kicks, punch and blocks? Is it about memorizing endless shapes? Is it about self defense? Is it about health and fitness? How about making friends and socializing? And what about all those buzzwords like self-discipline, self-confidence, self-control, self-esteem, and all those other "I" prefixes that fit our already exalted egos?

Some of us have already researched this topic to find out what karate is all about and have found many different but complementary answers. The wisdom of conventional martial arts tells us that karate is about honing our character, being sincere and honest, never giving up, building a strong spirit, doing everything possible at all times, adhering to strict discipline and good manners, following "the way" or "the Way" ", And reaching our potentiality in life.

I can guarantee that if I ask this question in a room full of students, all of the above answers will be voluntary and probably several more. The point of the prologue to this article is that karate is about none of the above and all of the above. It all depends on who you are eloquent with. The problem is that the difference between the words and actions of most people can be significant.

For example, saying karate is about focus and self-restraint, and then showcasing weak technique and bad manners while being easily distracted tells me that someone is not really true-to-life. Saying karate is about health and fitness, and then driving straight to McDonalds after school for a Big Mac with extra fries could be equally questionable in terms of honest practice.

So what is karate really about? I would say it is about YOU and it is about what YOU make of it. You can make it a fun and challenging side interest and family activity by engaging with other family members. You can make it a worthwhile physical activity by training hard and repairing your health and fitness. You can also turn it into an incredibly exhausting and frustrating quest that becomes potentially damaging to both your self-confidence and character by not trying to do your best and feeling like you're not "good" compared to everyone else in your class.

Or, as I have, you can make it a lifelong goal to try to capitalize on the strengths you were born with and gradually improve your weaknesses through the honest and fully committed practice of karate.

Excellency of character doesn't mean you never make a mistake. Trying to be sincere and honest doesn't mean that you never look hypocritical sometimes. Nor does trying your best mean you're never tired.

The most important thing in all of this is your self-awareness. Through the template and practice of karate, we should be able to constantly polish the stone that contains all of our abilities, so that we can clearly see our own reflection in all its beauty and even in all its ugliness.

Little by little, through the constant effort, practice and knowledge of ourselves that we develop through our practice, we can tip the balance of the scale of our life towards positive eating and self-improvement. This inevitably leads to helping others and finding our own place in this world. Karate, although not complete in itself, has many keys that lead us to this goal.

Good luck and best wishes on your karate trip.
